The newspaper Documento asked Υ. Bassias to explain the triangular relationship between artificial intelligence and LNG involving the United States, Europe, and Greece. As he states: “At this moment, the United States is looking at how it can maintain the advantage it currently holds over China, since it represents roughly 70% of global artificial intelligence capacity. But in order to do that, because China is developing rapidly, the U.S. must secure the energy availability it needs. Over the next one or two years, it will require a surplus of electrical power. So time is pressing, and this is why the U.S. is moving ahead with new infrastructure and the discovery of new natural‑gas deposits Data centers require high‑density, reliable energy. Experience from Spain and Portugal has shown that the cost in water resources was disproportionate, because they drew water from regions already facing scarcity. Technology has not yet advanced enough to allow them to use dirty deep‑groundwater or to recycle wastewater for their cooling needs. For the moment, the presence of data centers, given existing infrastructure, poses a threat to our water sufficiency.”
