We lack a strategy for our natural resources

In a recent discussion aired on Nea Kriti 98.4 FM, analysts examined the shifting global energy landscape: the intensifying confrontation between the United States and China over powering data centers, and Europe’s uncertain role in these developments. The debate underscored how digital infrastructure is reshaping energy geopolitics, placing Europe at the crossroads of supply, demand, and strategic vulnerability.

Yannis Bassias explained that, in terms of supply and demand, the United States has renewed its interest in drilling in the Eastern Mediterranean and Africa. He highlighted the role of Greece and Cyprus as intermediaries, through pipelines, storage facilities, and routes, for American LNG, while noting the variables that could alter these plans if the situation in Ukraine shifts toward a truce or peace agreement. He stressed that under such conditions it is vital for countries like Greece to develop their own strategy for exploiting natural resources, rather than merely acting as transit agents for external interests.

These dynamics along with the political “zigzags” of the so‑called green agenda are analyzed in detail in the book he published in April 2024, Cause and Effect: Economic Transition and Impacts on the Energy Mix.
