Chevron’s entry into hydrocarbon exploration within Greece’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) signals renewed international interest in the region’s energy potential. This move follows years of geopolitical turbulence, including the Turkey–Libya memorandum, which challenged Greek maritime claims and deterred major investors.
Greece stands to benefit from economic outputs generated by this process. However, a six-year research period is required, as the region has yet to show signs of production. Environmental concerns must also be addressed proactively to ensure long-term viability and public trust.
Turkey is not expected to obstruct the process, as the United States, through Chevron and Helleniq Energy, appears to support Greece’s energy strategy. This involvement effectively isolates the provocative Turkey–Libya agreement, which remains unrecognized by the United Nations.
