From Flames to Blue Hydrogen: The New Order in the Middle East

The new mantra of the era is clear: security first, sustainability second. Qatar is emerging as the West’s primary source of natural gas, while Iran is struggling to keep its infrastructure afloat amid sanctions and armed conflict.

In this context, U.S. energy policy is exploiting the crisis to impose a new order, promoting American LNG shipments as the only stable refuge from the instability in the Gulf. The American giants ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips, as well as the European company TotalEnergies, are the operational arms of this strategy in Qatar. They are participating in the new North Field projects and ensuring that the energy flow to Europe remains under Western control. The risk premium is turning into a cash-generating machine. Aramco collects an additional three hundred twenty-four million dollars daily, ExxonMobil one hundred thirty-eight million, and TotalEnergies approximately ninety million. Consumers worldwide are paying nearly three billion dollars a day because of this additional security cost.

Qatar is moving with mathematical precision, investing $50 billion not only in natural gas but also in the production of blue hydrogen. With Europe seeking clean energy, the emirate is building the infrastructure that will make it a global supplier of ammonia. This is not an ecological choice, but a practical one. Saudi Arabia is pouring over 110 billion dollars into the Jafurah field and the futuristic NEOM complex, which is at the heart of the Saudi Vision 2030 initiative. In contrast, Iran possesses vast reserves, but the quality of its crude and the high sulfur content in its gas require technology that remains inaccessible due to sanctions. This is technology that Qatar is applying extensively, taking full advantage of its access to Western companies and equipment. The result is that Iran remains stuck with an energy potential it cannot exploit, while Qatar is turning that same know-how into a lever of global influence.
